top hockey program overview

The TOP Hockey program provides a competitive hockey pathway for players ages 4 and up, focusing on our core values of quality coaching, character building, long-term development, and seasonal schedules that make it easier for kids to play multiple sports.

For the 2024-25 hockey season, we are excited to bring the TOP Hockey program to Richmond Hill for the very first time! Based out of NTR Richmond Hill (Elgin Mills & Bayview), we will be offering introductory Learn-to-Play programs for boys and girls born between 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Learn-to-Play Programs
Launching Fall 2024, Ages 4-6

Our Learn-to-Play hockey program is designed for beginner players who want to improve their hockey skills in a fun, engaging environment. Our program is built to incorporate progressive age-appropriate development with engaging activities and drills to create the optimal environment for kids to improve, have fun, and fall in love with the game!

U7 Development Program
Launching Fall 2025, Ages 5-6

NEW for the 2025-2026 hockey season is the introduction of the U7 Development Program for 2019 and 2020 birthyears, designed to provide young players with a development-focused hockey experience that bridges the gap between introductory hockey programs and competitive Academy teams.

Competitive Academy Teams
Launching in Fall 2025, Age 7

TOP Hockey Academy teams offer an innovative competitive hockey experience that features professional coaches, quality player development, and a unique multi-sport schedule. Academy teams generally feature 3x practices per week throughout the October to March season, as well as a local game schedule against other TOP Hockey team, plus external festivals and tournaments. Once Academy teams get to U11 and older, teams participate in the Ontario Rep Hockey League which features a full 32-game schedule and league championships.

TOP HOCKEY SEASON

At TOP Richmond Hill, the TOP Hockey season runs from early September to early April, with season breaks over the Christmas and Family Day holidays. Once the season ends, we strongly believe that children should put away their hockey equipment and play something different - it will help their hockey skills in the long run!

MEET TECHNICAL DIRECTOR IAN MACKENZIE!

If you've been involved with our programs over the past five years, it's likely you've seen Coach Ian hanging around the rink, field, or gym. One of the founders of TOP Sports, Ian is one of the most experienced and respected youth hockey coaches around. A native of Toronto, Ian was a very successful multi-sport athlete in high school, playing golf, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, and hockey, some at the provincial level, and found equal success in all sports. Upon graduation from high school Ian attended Wilfrid Laurier University to study Business and Communications, and briefly played junior hockey in Waterloo before shifting his focus to coaching.

After graduating from Laurier and spending time living abroad, Ian began running his own hockey school and worked with a number of major minor hockey clubs in Toronto. When TOP was founded in 2017, Ian was instrumental in developing the hockey program to what it is now, and is a huge part of creating #TheOtherPath.

Ian currently holds certificates from the National Coaching Certification Program and Hockey Canada, and will be pursuing his NCCP Advanced Coaching Diploma later this year. In addition to his role as the Technical Director of TOP Hockey, Ian also oversees parts of our Summer Hockey Camps, Collingwood Programs, and Coach Development Programs.
